My son, the escape artist

posted in Uncategorized |

My youngest child, Little Boy, is 19 months old. A couple weeks ago, maybe ten days ago, he figured out how to climb out of his crib. He is the first of my three children to do this. Neither of the girls ever did this. Ever. I was totally expecting it because I know that most children do, but they never did.

I realised that he was getting close to doing this when I had put him into his crib one morning to let him cry out his tantrum. When it got quiet I walked in to get him out and I saw him hiking his leg up as high as he could to try to get it over the top of the railing. He wasn’t quite there but I could see that he was very close. And just about a week later, after putting him in his crib again to have his little tantrum, this is what I heard:

CRY CRY CRY CRY SCREAM SCREAM SCREAM SOB SOB SOB

Quiet.

Quiet.

THUMP.

CRY CRY CRY SCREAM SCREAM.

Quiet.

Then…

Creeeeeeeak, as the door to his room opened.

Patter, patter, patter, as his feet carried him down the hallway, dragging his blanket. He gave me this huge smile as if to say “Look how clever I am!” And I knew our days were numbered.

We have since taken the side of his crib off, kind of making it like a toddler bed. Of course this also means that he can get out of bed on his own, so we are in the training process. I suspect that this will take a couple of weeks, so I’ve psyched myself up for it. Naptime and bedtime requires multiple trips to his room to put him back into bed, with the severity of the spanking increasing each time until either it hurts enough that he doesn’t want to repeat it or he just gets bored with his little game.

My goal is to outlast him and so far we’ve succeeded.
