Heart Obedience

posted in Uncategorized |

In our family we spend a lot of time training our children. Training them to not throw oatmeal on the floor. Training them to flush the toilet after they use it. Training them to say please and thank you. But most importantly, we train them to obey the first time.

We want them to obey the first time because God has asked them to. Yes, they need to do it because we asked them to, but ultimately it’s because God wants them to obey. This kind of training takes a LONG time. LOOOOOOONG time. But every once in a while we get a glimpse that it’s actually happening, that it’s getting into their heart.

I heard last night from my husband about something that happened at AWANAs on Wednesday night. Precious, nearly 5 years old, was playing the games with the big kids and won. The prize was a piece of bubble gum.  She was just holding it in her hand. The leader told her to go ahead and eat it, she didn’t have to wait. Her response? “My mom and dad said I can’t eat gum.” She didn’t whine about it. She didn’t try to sneak it. She just quietly obeyed what she knew her mom and dad had taught her.

Turns out that Daddy was just around the corner and he came upon the scene and told her that she could go ahead and eat it. She told me later, when I asked what she thought about gum, “It was pink! That’s my favourite colour.”

Although we don’t let the kids eat gum, simply because it doesn’t serve any useful purpose and I don’t want to be cutting gum out of hair, I am so happy that her first experience chewing gum was with pink gum. Cause that makes it just that much more special :)

When I heard this story last night from Handsome, I was almost glowing. I realised that it’s moments like that when I know all the time invested is worth it. And I pray that in a few years when it’s a decision even more crucial that she will remember what she’s been taught. And she will cling to the promises of God and know His ways are always the best.
