Watching them grow

Watching them grow

In an effort to remember the changes my children are making, I want to write down a few things that I observed this morning.

  • Cutie (3.5yo) was playing with a preschool activity bag this morning. She had to match the coloured laundry pegs to the dots and clip them on. She used to not be able to manipulate the pegs, but this morning she was clipping them on and completing the activity without any help from me.
  • Precious (5.5yo) wanted to have a tea party for morning tea. She asked if she could make the food and I said yes. She got out the bread and butter and cookie cutters and made ‘cookies’ for everyone, all by herself. And she even cleaned up after herself!

I’m trying to remember to remember these things! Sometimes the days are a blur and I don’t want to forget.

I’m jumping on the inside

Our 5yo had choir this morning and after it was finished, before we left the room, the piano accompanist told me that Precious has such a sweet little voice that comes through the other voices.  Later in the evening I was telling Handsome about how much Precious loves going to choir and singing the songs, but also how wiggly she is. Sometimes she’ll be singing while at the same time she’s waving her hands around or dancing in place. Her BSF teachers tell me how enthusiastic she is and how she is just so excited to be there. So I was telling Handsome about her exuberance and he said, matter of factly, “Oh, she gets that from you.”

“What? Me? I’m not jumping up and down.”

“Oh sure, but you’re jumping on the inside, aren’t you?”

This made me laugh out loud and I had to admit that yes, I was jumping on the inside. Like mother like daughter :)

Cheap mangoes

I’ve noticed that a local supermarket, which is generally really pricey, has started to have a section of reduced produce. Whenever I get low on fruit particularly I’ll go in and grab whatever they have. One time I got about ten pounds of apples for about $2. At the same time I bought 8 avocadoes for only 99 cents! They needed to be used quickly but they were fine.

Last night I went again because we were out of fruit. They were loaded down with bananas, most of which were fine, but probably on the ripe side. My kids don’t care! I bought 3-4 pounds. Whatever we don’t eat I’ll make into muffins.

The biggest  score was 6-7 mangoes for 69 cents. I don’t normally buy mangoes because, well, they’re expensive and they’re not the most favourite fruit around here. But because of the amount of fruit that we eat I buy whatever I can get inexpensively (Yvonne, I can’t tell you how much I miss that produce shop near your old house on Alfred St).

This morning I was thinking about what I could use those mangoes for, knowing that they wouldn’t get eaten straight. Hmmm… we had bananas, mangoes, yogurt - AH HAH! Smoothies! Then Handsome took it one step forward and suggested I make mango lassis, which are a favourite of ours whenever we eat Indian food.

I got online and found Jamie Oliver’s recipe for mango lassi and I whipped some up. Yum! Not quite as tart as I’d like so next time I’ll add more yogurt. But I gave some to Little Boy and he slurped it down and asked for more.  So it looks like I’ll be making lassis until the mangoes run out.

I’d love to find some marked down blueberries, but that’s not likely to happen!
