8 Things About My Marriage

8 Things About My Marriage

Jennifer over at Snapshot has tagged me for a marriage meme. I haven’t seen this one around before, and considering that my husband is now 10,000 kilometres away, I think now is a good time :)

1. I have been married 7 1/2 years.

2. One of the most romantic things he has ever done (it really stands out in my mind, not that he doesn’t do romantic things other times) was when we had been married about six months. I had a difficult time finding full-time work in NZ and was getting a lot of rejection letters in the mail. We didn’t have a lot of money and I had a big interview coming up but I didn’t feel comfortable in any of the clothes that I had. One evening I broke into tears and my husband takes me over to our closet and he pulls out an old boot. He upended the boot onto the bed and out falls about $100 in small bills and coins. He had secretly been stashing money away so that I could buy a nice interview outfit. I cried some more, but they were tears of joy :)

3. I am a musical person. When I used to pray about the person I would marry, I always wanted to pray for a musical person but thought that was a bit superficial. God heard my unspoken prayer and gave me a musical person who knocks my socks off.

4. We met on the internet.

5. I love when Handsome leads worship at church. Because I know his heart, watching him lead worship brings me that much closer to our Lord.

6. I know first hand that when my relationship with God is not strong, my marriage suffers. Because of this we put Bible study very high on our priority list.

7. When I look at our relationship, I see an example of Christ’s love for all of humanity. Marriage is a lot of work and requires a huge amount of grace.

8. Being without my husband these last 10 days have shown me that I am not complete without him. We are partners, in every since of the word.

Going to the toilet

Catchy title, huh? One major interesting thing about living in another country, even though it is the country of my birth, is that they use different language here. Obviously the primary language is English, but it’s a different kind of English.

For example…

In New Zealand if you need to ‘use the facilities’, it is not uncommon to ask “Where is the toilet?” Or perhaps you might hear “Where is the loo?” Neither of these are considered rude.

Here in the US, you would ask “Where is the bathroom?” Or even “Where is the restroom?”

I must say, it makes much more sense to me to ask where the toilet is. After all, when I’m out at a restaurant, I’m not planning on taking a bath and there isn’t even a bathtub in the room! So calling it a bathroom is really a misnomer. Precious, my oldest daughter, pointed this out to me last week. We were out somewhere (I don’t remember where) and someone we were with (I don’t remember who. Gotta love my attention to detail) had stepped out to the ‘restroom’. She asked where they had gone and I said that they’d gone to the bathroom. She looked at me with a quizical look and said “They’re taking a bath?”

And if a Kiwi is ever in the States and needs to use the loo, be prepared for a look of contempt if you ask where the toilet is. As if no one knows that’s what we really want!! We don’t want to rest, we’re not taking a bath, we simply need to use the facilities.

I miss my daddy

This is what my oldest daughter says almost every night as she goes to bed. Handsome is still in New Zealand, eagerly awaiting any piece of official paper from PNG. We now have an old friend, an Australian living in Port Morseby, working on our behalf as well. Please pray that something happens this week. I was talking to my dad about it this evening and I said that God must have something he wants me/us to learn through this whole situation. I said that I would be happy to go ahead and learn it so that we can just get this over with!

Will update later when more information is available. Sorry the posts have been so scarce. Although I have lots of blog fodder, I simply don’t have time during the day to write and in the evenings I’m just wiped out. Being a solo mum really stinks.

I miss you, Handsome.

Things I like about America…

Some days are better than others. On days that aren’t so great, where I’m really thinking “Man, I just want to be back in New Zealand” I focus on the things I like about living in America. This will be a runnning list that I’ll add to every once in a while (or more often if things aren’t going very well!)

1. Stores that are open 7 days a week at least until 8 pm.

2. Having my grandmother close by so that I can just call her up and invite her for dinner and hear the genuine pleasure in her voice at getting my call.

3. Graham crackers

4. Breakfast sausage

Broccoli & Cheese Casserole

What is to follow is a recipe that I remember absolutely loving when I was a child. My mom made it earlier this week and it was just as delicious as I remember. Now that we’re living in the US and can buy processed cheese food (Velveeta) I too can make this part of my repertoire. I’m writing it here so that I don’t forget it.

Broccoli Cheese Casserole

1/2 cup chopped onion

1/2 cup chopped celery

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1 can cream of chicken soup

3/4 lb velveeta cheese

1 pkg chopped broccoli

2 cups cooked rice

Saute onions and celery. Add soups and cheese. Cook broccoli and mix with above. Cook rice and place as lining for dish. Pour vegetable and soup mixture over rice - sprinkle with paprika. Bake 375 for 10-20 minutes until bubbly and brown.

Optional: add shredded chicken to rice mixture.

We’re having leftovers tonight and I’m going to snag the rest of this. Processed cheese food, gotta love it!

Giveaways all over the place

Updated: links are fixed.

The ladies at 5minutesformom are having another giveaway. You can win $300 worth of Horizon Organic dairy products. Go over and enter! We can all use a bit of free milk and cheese.

After my somewhat overwhelming shopping experience yesterday, I need to go back to the store at some point and write down some prices so I can comparison shop. I’ve been thinking about the organic thing for a while and wondering how the prices compare. Do any of you buy organic?

Stay to the right

This is what I chant to myself as I drive here in California - stay to the right, stay to the right. This will help me avoid going down the left side of a street which is divided by a median strip and therefore impossible to cross back to the correct side of the street when realising my mistake. An important part of NOT GETTING HIT BY A CAR. No. I didn’t get hit by a car. But I have been known to go out the wrong side of a parking lot, forgetting that I needed to be on the right side. This usually isn’t a problem until someone wants to come in on my side :)

From the mouths of babes

Precious (3yo) was just looking at old family photos from when I was about her age. My parents, who currently both have nearly silver hair, would have been around 25. She looked at her grandma and grandpa in the photos and asked “Who painted their hair?”
