Update on sick babies

Our little boy is okay. He slept all afternoon with no problems. The doctor actually rang us at home to check on him. Have you ever heard of such a thing?? I couldn’t believe it. I’m going to send him a thank you note. Anyway, he’s doing fine. Hopefully he has a good night.

sick babies

There are few things worse in the life of a mother than a sick child. I can now say, however, that I prefer a sick preschooler over a sick 6 week old baby. Last night I went to bed about 9 pm and I woke about 11 pm to my daughter being ushered into our bed by my husband. Turns out she had vomited all over her bed and he needed to change the sheets. He had taken off her pajamas and cleaned her up and told her to snuggle with me for a bit. He got her bed sorted out, with some direction from me. She went back to bed and seemed to be okay the rest of the night. I checked on her each time I got up with the baby. This morning she woke up at the normal time, a little bit less than her usual cheeriness, but otherwise okay.

The baby, on the other hand, has gotten progressively worse. The last few days I really believed that we were on the upswing into normalcy. He was starting to sleep longer at night (four-five hours instead of 2.5), was settling easier during the day, etc. Last night he awoke at 11, after sleeping nearly 5 hours. No problem, gave him a feed, changed his nappy, and put him back to bed. He settled pretty quickly. But then he woke again at just past 2, which is of course far short of our hoped for 4 hours. He wasn’t really interested in eating and was really grizzly. I settled him back in his bed and he went to sleep. Sort of. Basically for the rest of the night he fussed and whined, never really going into a deep sleep. He cried at 5 am so I got up then and he was very unsettled, definitely not himself. I put him in the Ergo (which is a miracle device, I’m sure of it) and he settled a bit more, dozing off and on. As the morning progressed he got worse and worse. Finally at 9 am we decided to take him to the doctor. Here in New Zealand childcare for under 5s is free, so even if they tell you it was just trapped gas, you don’t feel like you’ve wasted money.

Had to wait at the doctor’s quite a long time because it’s a Saturday and they’re only open a couple of hours and basically they were just trying to fit us in. I think the screaming infant helped us get in a little faster! Doctor checked him out very thoroughly but unfortunately couldn’t tell us what was wrong. He told me to give him some Pamol (that’s like Tylenol) and put him in the Ergo and see if he’ll settle. He said he wants to see him again in a couple of hours, even if he’s better. If he’s not better or gets worse, then we’ll need to go to the hospital. They don’t muck around with babies this young and when you’ve got a six week old that is basically crying for hours on end, then something just isn’t right. Doc also gave me a little pee bag to try to catch some of his urine to be tested for a UTI. So I stuck that on him (which I’m sure he’s really excited about) and we’ll take that in to the doctor.

I hate seeing my little guy in pain. I hate it. But at least with my preschooler she can tell me where it hurts. This little guy just cries and gets that glazed look in his eyes from lack of sleep.

I’ll update later.
