squeaky clean

squeaky clean

I realised something today: my kitchen is clean. Not freakishly clean, as in, you’d be happy for your baby to eat off the floor, kind of clean (although my 19 month old often does!) (not that I just throw her macaroni and cheese on the floor for her to lap up. I just wanted to make that clear.) I mean, I do sweep the floor pretty often and it gets mopped occasionally too. But there are some unidentified spots on the cabinets and some dust bunnies under the fridge. But it’s clean. Actually, it doesn’t sound like it’s very clean does it???

Anyway. Back to what I was thinking.

I have been married just over seven years. There have been times in our marriage when we had to wash forks before dinner in order to actually have a clean fork with which to eat our dinner. Or when we’ve had to wash a glass just so we could have a drink of water. To make matters worse, we owned a lot of dishes. So you can imagine what three or four days worth of dishes looks like piled up. I’m a bit ashamed to even write this, but I do have a reason.

Over the last seven years we have made huge progress in keeping our house clean and tidy. We never run out of socks or underwear anymore. Occasionally my oldest daughter isn’t able to find her favourite pink shirt, but that’s only because she just wore it the day before and decided to go play in the mud. The bathroom gets cleaned on a regular enough basis that I’m satisfied nothing is growing in the toilet and there are no visible toothpaste splatters on the bathroom sink.

But the one thing that has challenged me the most is the kitchen. Obviously we eat on a somewhat frequent basis (some of us more than others!) so the kitchen gets used many times throughout the day. This results in dirty dishes. And for some reason I haven’t been able to get my head around doing the dishes on a regular basis. I would end up spending 45 minutes after dinner washing all the dishes and getting the kitchen cleaned up, but even then it wouldn’t be completely clean, just enough so I felt like I’d made some progress.

I am happy to announce that my kitchen is clean (as previously mentioned). The dishes are done and put away (we don’t have a dishwasher). The floor is swept. There is even a clean dishtowel hanging off the oven. And I’ll tell you my secret - washing the dishes after every meal/snack. It works! It only takes a couple minutes and then by the time dinner comes around I only have the dinner dishes to wash, which can be done in the time it takes my husband to give the kids their baths.

I might be a slow learner, but at least I learn! Now, if I can just do something about the dust…

The show must go on…

You’ve probably noticed that I’ve not posted much recently. Yeah, I decided if I had to choose between taking a nap in the afternoon and blogging then napping would definitely take priority. I’ve reached the post-partum stage called “really, really, really tired”. He’s nearly six weeks now. Physically I feel pretty good, although still some bruising around my belly from the procedure. But the six weeks of broken nights has caught up with me and I’m whacked. First thing in the morning I’ve got a bit of energy so I do as much as I can during that time and then wing it the rest of the day. I’m very glad that my mom has come to visit for a few weeks. She’s staying with friends of ours around the corner, so she arrives most mornings by about 8am, in time for me to have a shower and help get the kids dressed. It also means that if I’m particularly tired I can hand the baby off to her and go lie down. I’m trying not to think about what happens when she leaves!

But yesterday, after getting short with my daughters for the umpteenth time that day, I told myself that I’ve just got to get over it. Yes, I’m tired and for very good reasons, but they still deserve my very best.

May the Lord be evident in me today as I teach my children about Him.
