Dr appt, stifling humidity, and cinnamon rolls

10th January 2007

Dr appt, stifling humidity, and cinnamon rolls

*sigh* That’s a sigh of relief, in case you were wondering. It’s just been one of those days and I’m glad that it’s nearing an end.

In the scheme of things it really hasn’t been a bad day, but for some reason the combination of waking up to whining children, a horribly humid day with no breeze, and feeling like I didn’t actually accomplish anything, makes me just want to go to bed and pray tomorrow is better.

One thing I’ve learned is that I should always do the dishes at night before I go to bed. Waking up to a tidy kitchen can really do wonders for starting the day off right. And one never knows if the children will be up all night sick or if I’ll be sick or if the cats that wander the neighbourhood will be sick outside of our window, thus keeping me awake. So at least if the dishes are done and the counters are wiped down I have a clean slate to work on in the morning.

I suppose I should write something to justify the title of this post. I had to take my youngest to the doctor this morning because she has an infected mosquito bite. I was hoping that she would be immune to bug bites like my husband and oldest daughter. Unfortunately she’s more like me, who swells at the slightest little ant bite. I’ve been treating the bite with antiseptic ointment but it just wasn’t improving. Doctor gave us a prescription for some stronger ointment and he said if it doesn’t improve by Friday (two days) to bring her back. While I was there I also got some cream for her dry skin, which I suspect might be eczema, and some liquid paracetemol, which is like Tylenol. The joys of socialised medicine! Childcare for kids under 6 is free in NZ, as well as most prescriptions, so I paid only $9.10 for three prescriptions and nothing for the doctor visit. Now that we’re planning to move to the States it makes me wonder how I’ll cope in a new system. It’s not like I can just pop in to the doctor ‘just in case’. I suppose I could, but I’ll just have to pay a lot more for it. But in the end if I’m worried about my kid, I don’t care how much it costs.

I’ve already mentioned the humidity. After nap time we all got in our swimsuits (yes, pregnant woman in swimsuit - take note) and ran through the sprinklers. Quite fun.

And I’m making cinnamon rolls even as I type. I love my breadmaker. I’ve been wanting to do some baking for a few days but the heat just makes it ridiculous to turn the oven on. My husband attends a men’s group at church on Thursday mornings at 6:30 and I like to provide some baked goods as often as I can. I’ve been wanting to make cinnamon rolls for a while so I’ll get those done and rising in the fridge before I go off to bed. If I get up at 6 I can get them baked before he has to leave. I’m normally awake by then anyway so it shouldn’t be a problem.

For not having accomplished a lot today, this post is very long. I had a long talk with my oldest daughter about staying in bed until 7 am. I explained that mommy likes to have some quiet time talking to God in the morning and that it’s important to her. I promised I’d come and get her out of bed at 7. She agreed that she could lay quietly in bed until then. Here’s praying she will! I’ll update you tomorrow.
